Old Palestine cemetery,
located at the north end of a large abandoned gravel pit, north and west
of the intersection of State Road 25 and County Road 300 S. It occupies
a space about 125 by 200 feet, with steep raw banks on three sides.
This cemetery has been abandoned
for many years and is overgrown with brush and briers. Many stones are
broken or have fallen over. Some remains have been removed, and there appear
to be several unmarked graves. These inscriptions were recorded on 2 November
1976 by L.H. Binnie, Rt. 4, Albion, Indiana. The data was checked against
the partial D.A.R. records made about 40 years ago. Underlined portions
indicate corrections made to older records. In some cases, parts of the
inscriptions could not be read, but the D.A.R. records provided the missing
parts. These parts are proceeded by an asterisk. Questionable figures
or other parts are enclosed in parenthesis.
The "Combination Atlas of Kosciusko County", 1879 does not provide
any information on this cemetery. It states that the town of Palestine
was laid out by Isham Summy.
Unless otherwise stated, all odd numbered rows were recorded from north to south, even numbered from south to north.

End of stones found in 1976.
Of the 84 inscriptions found in the Old Palestine Cemetery in 1976, the D.A.R. recorded 48 about 40 years ago. These older records contain the following additional inscriptions, not found in 1976. It is possible that some of the stones involved have been moved to other nearby cemeteries.
1. DREISBACH, George
died 1872,45 Years
2. " Hannah

3. FRUSH, Geo.

6. (MACHONE) Nimrod,
name uncertain, died 22 June 1842, age 53 Years
& 2 Months. This is probably the same stone as No.6, in
row 10, and the data should be considered more accurate than
that found in 1976.

The following was received 3 Mar 2003 and augments the above document:
"Hello,
I was searching the Kosciusko county website and found the story of your visit to the old Palestine Cemetery. Perhaps you would like to add the following information to your page.
The following is from my husband's family:
3. BAKER, Susan, wife of Ira, died 8 Nov. 1857, (22-6-17),
possibly 27-10-0.
4. " J. Quincey, son of L. & E. died 6 Mar. 1861, 1-1-9
5. " ? of L. & E. died 6 (Nov.) 1862, 0-10-7
# 3 is Susan Kessler Baker, first wife of Ira Baker
Susan KESSLER
----------------------------------------
#4 is John Quincy Baker, son of Ira Baker and 2nd wife, Elizabeth Burkett
#5 is Leroy Elijah, son of Ira and 2nd wife, Elizabeth Burkett
Leroy Elijah BAKER (Died as Child)
Ira Baker and Elizabeth Burkett Baker are the GG grandparents of my husband.
They later moved to Missouri and then on to Kansas where they died.
I was hoping to find out where the rest of Ira and Elizabeth's children were
buried, but only your cemetery list was transcribed on-line.
Ira had 15 children and 8 of those died in infancy/childhood.
Thanks,
